Societies

The Societies of Alankha are conglomerates, sometimes of massive proportions, who are responsible for most business transactions within the city. Each Society normally has its own specialization, although a few are known to dabble in many different business interests simultaneously (most notable among these is the Aurarchal Society Taiju). The allure of the security and support afforded by Society inclusion is strong, and most business owners in Alankha have petitioned one Society or another for membership because of this. There are those, however, who prefer not to pay the "tithe" requested by Societies of their members and continue to operate businesses on their own; Dhaku is one such daring spirit. This often results in friction between owners and some of the more minor Societies who actually view such independent operators as a threat.

Societies are very loosely regulated by the Conclave in theory--in practice, most Societies can get away with whatever they need to as long as they have the proper ears bent towards their causes.

The major--or Aurarchal, after their leaders--Societies are Taiju, Vani, Jheed, Saitik, and Kriga.
